Another insider confirms a remake of Final Fantasy IX

Nearly three years have passed since the existence of a Final Fantasy IX remake was confirmed by a GeForce NOW leak. Although the majority of the titles on Nvidia’s list were revealed in advance, some were never released.

This also holds true for Square Enix’s recreation of the ninth major installment of the Final Fantasy series. All the same, speculations persisted even in the absence of an official statement. Early in June 2023, a ResetEra source revealed that the Final Fantasy IX Remake will only be available on the PlayStation and would not employ the battle system from the Final Fantasy VII Remake. According to the same insider, the game is almost ready for release and will have better graphics and updated models, but it won’t be as large of a budget as the remake of Final Fantasy VII. Two months prior, an additional insider mentioned that he had also heard the same thing: the remake will be reasonably budgeted and authentic to the original.

Insider Midori added credence to these allegations yesterday, stating that Square Enix is in fact working on a remake of Final Fantasy IX. But as of right now, there are no intentions to remake Final Fantasy X.

Although Midori first gained notoriety as a SEGA insider, she has also hinted to a potential rerelease of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the next Switch 2 system. This is the first time Square Enix information has been disclosed via Midori.

For the PlayStation 2, the original Final Fantasy IX was released in 2000. Leaving behind the futuristic landscapes of the previous games, the game brought the franchise back to a medieval setting called Gaia. As part of a plot by the nearby state of Lindblum, players take on the role of a thief called Zidane Tribal, who kidnaps Princess Garnet Tyl Alexandros XVII. He sets off with Garnet and an expanding group of friends to depose her mother, Queen Branagh, who instigated the conflict.

It is anticipated that the remake of Final Fantasy IX will be revealed at the PlayStation Showcase, which takes place next week.
