The University of Karachi, a Federal University founded by the parliament in 1951, is situated on 1200 acres of land. However, the status of the institution was changed to university of the province of Sindh through another act of the parliament in 1962. After being amended in 1951, the Karachi University Act was passed on October 23, 1950, and Prof. A. B. A. Haleem was named as the institution’s first vice chancellor. The University of Karachi continued to serve as an examination university for the connected colleges for the first two years. It began doing research and teaching at two faculties of arts and sciences in the year 1953. The university, which began with a 50-student enrollment, has grown into a massive building with 53 floors.Under eight colleges of Arts, Science, Islamic Studies, Pharmacy, Management and Administrative Sciences, Law, Education, and Medicine, there are 20 renowned, world-class research centres and institutes. As of June 30, 2018, there are currently a little over 41,000 regular students enrolled at the Campus. There are more than 2100 support staff members and approximately 700 teachers.
Initially, the University was housed in modest structures next to the Civil Hospital. Meanwhile, the university’s rapid growth made it apparent that the space it was using was insufficient for its requirements. Furthermore, higher education and research were not supported by the crowded, dirty environment. As a result, 1279 acres of land on Country Club Road (now Institution Road) were purchased, and on January 18, 1960, the university moved to its new campus. The university’s existence entered a new chapter at this point. Numerous old students’ associations and the university administration continue to observe the day together.
The name of each eminent educator and scholar associated with Karachi University is proudly mentioned, including Dr. I. H. Qureshi, Dr. Mahmud Hussain, Dr. Salemuzzaman Siddiqui, Dr. Afzal Hussain Qadri, Dr. M. M. Ahmed, Dr. Mujtaba Karim, Prof. M. Ilyas, Prof. Q.
