The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a global humanitarian organization with approximately 97 million volunteers, members, and staff that was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all people, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering without regard to nationality, race, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity, religious beliefs, class, allegiance, or political opinions.

The movement is made up of several distinct organizations that are legally independent of one another but are linked together by common basic principles, objectives, symbols, statutes, and governing bodies.

The movement’s components are as follows:

Henry Dunant and Gustave Moynier founded the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1863. Its 25-member committee has unique international humanitarian law authority to protect the lives and dignity of victims of international and internal armed conflicts. The ICRC has received the Nobel Peace Prize three times. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) was established in 1919 to coordinate activities among the Movement’s 188 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. On a global scale, the Federation leads and organizes relief assistance missions in close collaboration with National Societies in response to large-scale emergencies. The Secretariat of the International Federation is based in Geneva, Switzerland. The Federation (then known as the League of Red Cross Societies) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1963.National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies can be found in almost every country on the planet. Currently, the ICRC recognises and admits 188 National Societies as full members of the Federation. Each entity operates in its home country in accordance with the principles of international humanitarian law and the international Movement’s statutes. National Societies can take on additional humanitarian tasks that are not directly defined by international humanitarian law or the mandates of the international Movement, depending on their specific circumstances and capacities. By providing emergency medical services, they are tightly linked to the respective national health care system in many countries.

The Pakistan Red Crescent Society was established on December 20, 1947, by an Order titled “The Pakistan Red Cross Order” issued by Quaid-e-Azam, the Governor General of Pakistan and the Society’s Founding President. The Society has branches in all five provinces, one regional branch in the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA), the Federal Capital Territory of Islamabad Branch, and the State Branch of AJK, with its National Headquarters in the Federal Capital Islamabad.

The PRC coordinates its field operations through these branches and 92 district-level branches. This vast network is managed by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers drawn from all walks of life.
