History
Since its founding in 1956 as the modest Central Heart Clinic in Ward 10 of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases has served as Pakistanis’ main source of cardiovascular care.

On August 14th, 1971, NICVD became a fully operational tertiary cardiac-care facility with assistance from the Government of Pakistan, USAID, and the Japanese Government. After eight years as a non-governmental organisation (NGO), NICVD was nationalised by the Pakistani government in 1979 and changed its status to that of an autonomous body under the Federal Ministry of Health.

With the Honorable Chief Minister of Sindh serving as Chairman of the Board of Governors, the current Governing Body of NICVD is a part of the Sindhi government. The NICVD Executive Director continues to serve in the capacities of Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, Secretary of the Board of Governors, and Chairman of the Academic Faculty.

Founder
Dr. Ali Muhammad Kasim returned to Pakistan with a desire to assist individuals in need because he was deeply concerned about the future of cardiology in a developing nation. After serving in British India during the Second World War and receiving his postgraduate study in the UK and the USA, he began working at Jinnah Central Hospital (JCH) in 1948.

Dr. Kasim developed the Dow Medical College library and elevated JCH to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) with his remarkable vision for progress. Dr. Kasim made the first step toward realising his objective in 1963 when former president Field Marshall Ayub Khan lay the cornerstone for the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), following successful attempts to raise money from international organisations and personal contacts.

Dr. Kasim passed away in 1964, so he was unable to witness the eventual results of the seeds he had planted. But after his passing, he was appointed the NICVD’s first Executive Director (1963–1964) and given the Sitara-e-Khidmat for his selfless service to his nation.
