HISTORY

In 1962, Commandant Army Staff College Major General (then Lieutenant General) Sahabzada Yaqub Khan, who was renowned for his military prowess and intellectual prowess, was asked to develop a war course that would be taught at Command and Staff College Quetta.
The inaugural Army War Course, which had 12 participants and included one representative from each of the Navy and Air Force, began on May 1st, 1963, under the direction of Army Staff College Quetta. The course’s strength was increased to 16 in 1965. Due to the 1965 Pakistan-Indian War, there was no course in 1966.

On May 28, 1970, the National Defence College (NDC), housed in the former National Assembly Building, also known as Ayub Hall, was founded in Lalkurti Rawalpindi after it was realised the need for a distinct institution. Later, NDC constructed a permanent structure, where the College resided for the following 25 years. The inaugural Commandant of the NDC was Major General Abdul Hamid Khan, SQA, while the Chief Instructor was Brigadier Muhammad Ahmed, SJ (War Wing).

The Army War Course was renamed the “Armed Forces War Course” in 1971, and enrollment was increased to 20 students, including three officers from the Navy and three officers from the Air Force. The College was associated with the Federal University of Islamabad (now Quaid-i-Azam University) in 1975 at the behest of the then-prime minister, Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, in order to grant MSc (War Studies) degrees to students who had completed the Armed Forces War Course. General Muhammad Zia Ul Haq, the president at the time, decided to move the college to Islamabad in February 1980 since there wasn’t enough room for it to expand in Lalkurti. On August 14, 1995, the College moved into a newly constructed building in Islamabazd.

NDC was raised to the rank of a university in 2007, and War College was given the title of Armed Forces War College inside the university. The College currently performs its duties as a component of National Defence University, which was chartered in March 2007. The Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee decided to combine the War Course and National Defense Course into one integrated course in February 2009, renaming it the “National Security and War Course.” National Security (NS) Term and Military Strategy (MS) Term are the two terms that make up the course.
