In RPGs, developers often approach romance and sexuality differently. The first way is to set specific orientations for each character. For example, Zevran in Dragon Age: Origins is bisexual, while Alistair is heterosexual.

The second way is to make the characters “playsexual”, as in Baldur’s Gate 3, where their orientations are adapted to the interests of the player, regardless of their gender. However, in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the developers chose a third option: all characters will be canonically pansexual, according to game director Corinne Bush in an interview with IGN .

Bush noted that characters that adapt to the player’s interests can be off-putting. In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, characters will be pansexual regardless of the player’s identity. For example, a character might flirt with Harding, but if the romance doesn’t start, she might get involved with another character, Taash.

The issue between “playsexuality” and canonical sexuality has its pros and cons. “Gamesexuality” allows the player more freedom to interpret characters, while canon sexuality allows for more open discussion of sexuality within the context and world of the game.

At the same time, it will be interesting to see how the characters will start romances with each other if the player does not take the initiative. After all, not everyone plays games for imaginary relationships. Bush also confirmed that the game will feature nudity and sex scenes to help flesh out the characters. For example, the necromancer Emmrich will be more intimate and sensual.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will release on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series later this year.
