Analog computers

Analog computers use continuous physical magnitudes to represent quantitative information. After World War II, voltages were employed instead of mechanical components; by the 1960s, digital computers had entirely supplanted them. Initially, they used mechanical components to represent quantities (for more information, see differential analyzer and integrator). Despite this, analog computers and certain hybrid digital-analog systems were in use far into the 1960s for a variety of tasks, including the simulation of flight in airplanes and spacecraft.

One of the benefits of analog computation is that it might be easier to design and construct an analog computer to tackle a single problem than it is with digital computers. Another benefit is that analog computers frequently can represent and solve a problem in “real time.” This means that the computation moves at the same rate as the system that is being modeled by the analog computer. The most significant drawbacks associated with them include the following: general-purpose devices are expensive and difficult to design, and analog representations have a limited degree of precision (usually a few decimal places, but even less in complex processes).

Digital computers

Throughout history, the most advanced and powerful types of computers have often been referred to as supercomputers. Their employment was traditionally restricted to high-priority computations for government-sponsored research, such as nuclear simulations and weather prediction, because of the prohibitively high cost of these systems in the past. Many of the computational methods that were pioneered by early supercomputers are now commonly used in personal computers. On the other hand, the development of expensive, specialized processors for supercomputers has been overtaken by the utilization of massive arrays of commodity processors (ranging from a few dozen to over 8,000) that carry out their tasks in parallel while connected to high-speed communications networks.


The word “minicomputer” didn’t appear until the middle of the 1960s, but the first minicomputers appeared in the early 1950s. Minicomputers were often employed in a single department of an enterprise and were frequently devoted to a particular task or shared by a small group. Computer hardware

A computer’s central processing unit (CPU), its main memory (also known as random-access memory, RAM), and its peripherals are the three primary categories that make up its physical components, often known as its hardware. In 1965, Gordon Moore, one of the founders of Intel, declared what is now commonly referred to as Moore’s law: the number of transistors that may be found on a chip will approximately double every 18 months. Moore hypothesized that his law would eventually become invalid due to a lack of financial resources, yet it has been amazingly accurate for a significantly longer period than he initially anticipated. Since transistors would have to consist of only a few atoms each sometime between 2010 and 2020, the laws of quantum physics predict that at that point they would cease to function properly. It now looks that technical limits may finally invalidate Moore’s law.

Central processing unit

The central processing unit (CPU) is responsible for providing the circuits that implement the computer’s instruction set, also known as its machine language. An arithmetic-logic unit (also known as an ALU) and control circuits make up this device. The arithmetic and logic unit, or ALU, is responsible for doing fundamental computations, while the control section sets the order in which those computations are carried out, including the branch instructions that move control from one area of a program to another. Although it was originally thought of as a component of the central processing unit (CPU), the main memory is now recognized to be its entity. However, the boundaries shift, and central processing unit chips now incorporate some high-speed cache memory as well. The ALU can include anywhere from six to over a hundred registers, which are used to temporarily store the results of its computations. These results can then be used for additional arithmetic operations or transferred to the main memory.

Branch instructions are provided by the circuits that are located in the control area of the CPU. These branch instructions are responsible for making basic judgments regarding which instruction should be carried out next. As an illustration, a branch instruction might read as follows: “If the result of the most recent ALU operation is negative, jump to point A in the program; otherwise, continue with the instruction that immediately follows.” These instructions enable “if-then-else” decisions to be made within a program as well as the execution of a sequence of instructions, such as a “while-loop” that performs a set of instructions repeatedly as long as a certain condition is met. The subroutine call is a related instruction that is used to transfer execution to a subprogram and then, once the subprogram is finished, transmits execution back to the main program at the point where it was left off.

It is impossible to differentiate between data and programs that are kept in the memory of a computer that uses stored programs. Both are bit patterns, which are sequences of ones and zeros, and both are retrieved from memory by the central processing unit (CPU). The bit patterns can either be interpreted as data or as program instructions. The central processing unit (CPU) contains a program counter that stores the memory address (position) of the following instruction that will be carried out. The “fetch-decode-execute” cycle is the fundamental function of the central processing unit (CPU):

  • It is necessary to get the instruction from the address that is being held at the program counter and then save it in a register.

  • After all of these steps have been completed, the cycle is prepared to begin again, and it will continue doing so until a particular halt command brings an end to the execution.

A clock that cycles at a high frequency is responsible for regulating the steps of this cycle as well as all of the processes that take place within the CPU (now typically measured in gigahertz, or billions of cycles per second). Another aspect that contributes to overall performance is the “word size,” which refers to the number of bits that are retrieved from memory all at once and serve as the basis for how CPU instructions are carried out. Although sizes ranging from 8 to 128 bits are seen, digital words now consist of either 32 or 64 bits.

When instructions are processed one at a time, also known as serially, this frequently results in a bottleneck since there may be a large number of program instructions that are ready but waiting to be executed. The design of central processing units (CPUs) has, since the early 1980s, adhering to a methodology that was first known as reduced-instruction-set computing (RISC). This design minimizes the transfer of data between the memory and the CPU (all ALU operations are performed exclusively on the data that is stored in the CPU registers), and it asks for instructions that are very simple and may run very quickly. Both of the primary forms of instruction-level parallelism (ILP) in the central processing unit (CPU) have their beginnings in the earliest supercomputers. When one instruction is being carried out, it may be possible for another instruction to get its operands, a third instruction to be decoded, and a fourth instruction to be retrieved from memory. The second type of ILP involves the central processing unit (CPU) having multiple execution units, including duplicate arithmetic circuits, as well as specialized circuits for graphical instructions or for performing floating-point computations. This type of ILP was developed by Intel (arithmetic operations involving noninteger numbers, such as 3.27). The “superscalar” architecture allows for the simultaneous execution of many instructions.

There are challenges involved in both types of ILP. If preloaded instructions in the pipeline were executed before the branch instruction jumped to a new section of the program, then the branch instruction might render those instructions meaningless. Because arithmetic operations cannot be carried out concurrently, superscalar execution must assess whether or not one arithmetic operation depends on the outcome of another operation. These days, central processing units (CPUs) contain additional circuits that allow them to assess instructional dependencies and predict whether or not a branch will be taken. These are now extremely complex and can regularly alter instructions to carry out a greater number of tasks concurrently.

Main memory

Both mercury delay lines, which were tubes of mercury that stored data as ultrasonic waves, and cathode ray tubes, which stored data as charges on the tubes’ screens, were among the earliest forms of computer main memory. Cathode ray tubes were also among the early forms of computer main memory. Invented around 1948, the magnetic drum was able to store both data and programming in the form of magnetic patterns by utilizing an iron oxide coating on a rotating disc.

Any device that is bistable, or can be set to either of two states, can function as memory in a binary computer since 0 and 1 are the only two potential bit values that can be represented. In 1952, the first device that could store data in RAM for a reasonable price was magnetic-core memory. It was made up of very small ferrite magnets in the shape of donuts that were strung into the intersection points of only a two-dimensional wire grid. While these wires delivered currents to change the direction of the magnetization of each core, a third wire that was threaded through the doughnut was used to detect the orientation of the core’s magnetic field.

1971 was the year that saw the introduction of the first integrated circuit (IC) memory chip. A bit is stored in an integrated circuit memory device using a combination of a transistor and a capacitor. In addition to the main memory, computers typically contain a specialized video memory (VRAM) that is used to store graphical images for the computer display. These images are referred to as bitmaps. It is common for this memory to include a dual port, which means that it is capable of storing a new image while simultaneously allowing the present data to be read and displayed.

Secondary memory

The data and programs that are not currently being utilized by a computer are stored in the device’s secondary memory. Magnetic tape was another form of secondary storage utilized by early computers. Other forms of secondary storage were punched cards and paper tape. Tape is inexpensive, and it can come on huge reels or in small cassettes. However, it has the drawback of having to be read or written sequentially, starting at one end and working your way to the other.

In 1955, IBM released the RAMAC, the world’s first magnetic disc. It had a storage capacity of 5 megabytes and cost $3,200 a month to rent. In the same way that tape and drums are made of platters coated with iron oxide, magnetic discs are as well. The read/write (R/W) head is comprised of an arm that moves radially over the disc and is equipped with a tiny wire coil. Because the disc rotates so quickly (at a rate of up to 15,000 revolutions per minute), the R/W head can reach any sector on the disc very quickly.

The first discs had big platters that could be removed. In the 1970s, IBM created sealed discs with fixed platters that came to be known as Winchester discs. The name “Winchester” may have originated from the fact that the earliest versions of these discs featured two 30-megabyte platters, similar to the Winchester 30-30 rifle. Not only was the sealed disc protected against filth, but the R/W head could also “fly” on a thin air layer extremely close to the platter. This allowed the head to operate more efficiently. It was possible to significantly reduce the area of oxide film that represented a single bit by moving the head closer to the platter. This increased the amount of data that could be stored. This fundamental technique is still employed today.

Refinements have included the addition of numerous platters to a single disc drive, with as many as ten or more in certain cases, as well as a pair of RW heads for each of the two surfaces of each platter. This was done to boost storage capacity as well as data transfer rates. Even higher advantages have resulted from improvements made to the regulation of the radial motion of the disc arm from track to track. This has led to a denser distribution of data on the disc, which has led to the aforementioned improvements. By the year 2002, such densities had reached more than 8,000 tracks per centimeter (20,000 tracks per inch), and a platter with the diameter of a penny was capable of holding more than a gigabyte of data. The price of an 80-gigabyte disc was approximately $200 in the year 2002. The mid-1980s and the 1990s saw the introduction of optical storage devices such as the CD-ROM (compact disc, read-only memory) and the DVD-ROM (digital videodisc, sometimes known as the versatile disc). They both use lasers to write and read the data, which is stored as a series of tiny pits in plastic grouped in a spiral pattern similar to that of a phonograph record. The amount of data that can be accessed from a CD-ROM is limited to 650 megabytes due to the presence of error-correcting codes, which can correct issues such as dust, tiny defects, and scratches. Input devices

Joysticks that provide “force feedback,” for example, are one type of device that manufacturers have stated will provide users with tactile feedback. This demonstrates how difficult it may be to categorize peripherals; for example, a joystick that has force feedback can function as both an input and an output device.

Impact printing was commonly employed in early printers. In this method, a small number of pins were forced into a particular pattern by an electromagnetic printhead. This process was known as “impact printing.” Every time a pin was advanced, it came into contact with an inked ribbon, which resulted in the creation of a single dot on the paper that was the same size as the pinhead. The formation of characters and visuals via the combination of several dots into a matrix gives rise to the term “dot matrix.” Daisy-wheel printers were yet another early form of printing technology. These printers were similar to electric typewriters in that they made impressions of entire characters with a single strike of an electromagnetic printhead. In virtually all commercial contexts, such printers have been replaced by laser printers. In laser printers, a concentrated beam of light is used to etch patterns of positively charged particles onto the surface of a cylinder drum composed of negatively charged organic material that is photosensitive. Negatively charged toner particles cling to the patterns carved by the laser as the drum rotates, and these patterns are then transmitted from the drum to the paper. Inkjet printing is yet another printing technique that has been created for use in homes and small companies that is more cost-effective. The vast majority of inkjet printers create characters by ejecting extremely minuscule droplets of ink to form a matrix of dots, in a manner very similar to that of dot matrix printers.

Display devices for computers have been in use for about the same amount of time as computers themselves. Cathode ray tubes (CRTs), which were also utilized in television and radar systems, were adapted for use in the first computer displays. The emission of a carefully regulated current of electrons, which then collide with a layer of light-emitting phosphors on the back of the screen, is the core idea that underpins the operation of CRT displays.
