Lost in Random

Cruel limits of chance

Once on the site there was already a review of one of the Zoink Games games with the laconic name Fe. Then all the creative impulses of the authors drowned in acid tones and screams of strange animals, losing the plot along the way, but their new game Lost in Random does not repeat such a mistake. But now we need to check if she found another ditch to fall into.

Welcome to a dark fairy tale: a pinch of a famous director, more fog and curved surfaces, add deliberately hypertrophied creatures, sprinkle cards on top – and voila! It remains only to kidnap the girl to make it all spin.

In one country, a sinister queen rules, who long ago established her dragon orders and divided the once unified kingdom into six regions. The heroine named Even takes away her older sister, who is twelve years old. Well, the queen has such a hobby, to collect all the children of a given age and determine their future fate with the help of an ominous black cube (in fact, here, in general, all more or less important events are decided by a throw of a bone). And since Even lives in the first area, while the sixth fell out to her sister, then it will take a long time to save her, along the way uniting with a living cube muttering something incomprehensible, which is responsible for the not very successful combat system along the way.

The bottom line is simple: when adversaries appear, in the role of all sorts of robotic knights, bugs and flying creatures, the heroine has to dodge their attacks, slowly shooting off crystals growing on enemies and thereby opening special cards of different cost. We open the cards, roll the die, get the points that have fallen on it and use them to activate the cards. Time freezes at this point, allowing you to carefully set traps, heal, materialize the sword and sneak up on the robot from behind to hit him properly. It sounds interesting, and it would all be quite fun … if it weren’t so boring.

At first, when there are not enough cards, and the die cannot yet throw out large numbers, it all comes down to constant running around and collecting crystals, which is rather tiring. Further, when it is already possible to set up cannons and summon a bow with explosive arrows, things go much more fun, but there are much more enemies to bring down. As a result, only special board games turn out to be really exciting, where new rules are added and huge figures move, but there are not so many such moments in Lost in Random.

In addition to fighting, the game has a wandering simulator. Even knows how to awkwardly run, jump from hills with a separate button and shoot at vases with a slingshot to get coins and lower them to new cards from a colorful seller. There are also special doors scattered around the world, where you should launch the cube in order to withdraw all the same money. Well, the list of optional entertainments completes the collection of special suitcases that open parts of the history of the fall of the kingdom of Chance.

Despite constant odes to randomness, the journey in Lost in Random is very linear. There are additional tasks in each city, but they can often be solved simply by talking to some character, and in general, in the local cramped area, they are very difficult to miss. And there really is not much space here: narrow streets, crooked houses, everything is tightly nailed down with nails (except for the ubiquitous vases with coins). But the stories in these narrow streets are not bad. Let’s say there is a city here where everyone has a second essence, and the local mayor has grown out of his head an evil double who loves rhymes and builds a copy of the city over the settlement.

Everything is done elegantly and stylishly, however, the artists frankly gravitate towards rusty surfaces and gray surroundings. Yes, this is dictated by the plot, but the impressions remain rather sad. But the characters are colorful, but they are sorely lacking in normal lip sync with speech. And also, in the worst traditions of some Japanese games, the heroine is not voiced in conversations, even though she has her own voice and can be heard in the videos (which also makes a controversial impression, because there she sounds not like an eleven-year-old girl, but like an adult aunt who doesn’t even tries to hide his age). Another oddity is that, to enhance the color, some characters speak a separate language that sounds something like a slow rocking of stones and gets bored very quickly. Fortunately, the situation is saved by a local storyteller, who constantly strives to break through the fourth wall, and in the end manages to do it in both directions. Actually, all the most interesting things that are in Lost in Random are connected with it.

All in all, Zoink Games has an uneven game once again. On the one hand, a plot was brought into it, which is interesting to watch (even if there are not enough stars from the sky). On the other hand, the combat system quickly becomes annoying (and there are more and more fights here). Rare choices that come across on the way lead to nothing, and additional tasks are needed mainly to get combat cards and money. And yet, this is the case when colorful characters and the plot maintain interest until the very end, not allowing you to quit the game.
